Jul. 28th, 2009 06:46 pmGot the first of my birthday presents today - my grandfather took me to Borders and let me loose. Including the book he picked up for me ahead of time, I got:
The Nasty Bits, Anthony Bourdain
The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature, Matt Ridley
Food Bites: The Science of the Foods We Eat, Hartel and Hartel
The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science, Natalie Angier (She basically asked a lot of leading scientists, "What's the one thing you want people to know about your field?" SO EXCITED.)
The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Carl Sagan
The Skeptic's Dictionary: A Collection of Strange Beliefs, Amusing Deceptions, and Dangerous Delusions, Robert Carroll
Julie and Julia, Julie Powell.
I also took the opportunity to snag two gifts for David:
Manual of the Planes - D&D supplement
On Basilisk Station, David Weber.
So yes, my interests revolve around science, skepticism, cooking, and gaming. (There's a bit on the side, but.)
Also, our power went out the other day, and that finally kicked me back into reading. I read The Thief and am 15-20 pages from finishing The Vor Game. Thinking I'm going to read The Nasty Bits next and then, since I'll be at the beach without internet for a week, probably finally tackle Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.
Also-also, working in the lab again makes me feel both productive and terribly guilty for the month I missed. I'm knocking out the data entry for our anxiety IRAP, which is nice, and provides a good break from the continuing tedium of getting the databases for the qual/quan study cleaned up. I still have three of those to go. Seven down... I can do it. I just don't want to. T_T
On the topic of my own research, I got in contact with Tabitha, finally, and am working out stuff for next summer. :) Exciteddddd!
Lana's jacket is almost done. I need to remove one cuff and shorten it somewhat (they ended up two different lengths. T_T Stupid mistakes...), tack the lining down, hem the jacket, put on the last bias tape detailing, attach the pocket flaps, and put on the snaps. And then it's done except for the epaulettes. :D After that, it's onto my Barrayaran gown unless I hear back from Tess soon about potential AUSA plans~

Date: 2009-07-29 02:03 am (UTC)Also, hope David likes his books too. I can say from experience that Manual of the Planes is a great book.
Anyway...HAPPY BIRTHDAY...soon-ish anyway.
