Any of you guys throw clay (wheel working)? I'm loving it, but... my hands don't seem to be.

I tried putting on a beeswax-based hand lotion before and during working today, but if anything, my hands are worse. After last week, I had maybe 6-8 eczema blisters. Now I have the makings of enough blisters to potentially cover my palms if I'm particularly unlucky.

I really want to continue the class, since I enjoy it a LOT, but... if it leaves me unable to move my hands...

This never happened to me when I took ceramics... what kind of clay are you working with?

Don't know the exact kind. Everybody else in the class is fine, though, and I have a history of somewhat sensitive skin.

I don't seem to have issues with handbuilding, just the friction of wheel work, which I guess makes sense. It just sucks, since I dislike handbuilding and love throwing. XD

I know this might sound stupid, but are you using enough water for friction?

I second this. My hands get raw sometimes when I sculpt (I have eczema, too) if there's too much friction, and that's without a wheel.

Well, given that one of my pots fell down from being too wet to hold up its walls... XD

But yeah, I have yet to master keeping it at the same consistency at all times. It's not really hands getting raw, though - that I can feel and deal with as it happens. I'm talking about my hands breaking out into tiny eczema boils, which start below the surface.

Are you allergic to mold?

Not that I know of. I don't have much in the ways of actual allergies.

Have you tried wearing gloves? That might help.

And oh, you poor thing. I have something similar, but it breaks out on the backs of my hands in winter and itches like hell.

Not yet. That's on my list of things to do. :)

Luckily, mine isn't itchy. It's just... okay, well, it's not lucky. XD It hurts like hell to move my hands.

BUT, this time it looks more like contact dermititis, which goes away far more quickly. (Also, it's starting to look like it's not WORKING the clay that's doing it - the hand I use to center/guide/do all the work that involves prolonged contact with the clay is actually better than my other hand.)

Try wearing gloves (I've had this problem; my skin is sensitive to everything and it was the clay doing that)

..long time no speak :/ how are you?

Yeah - after just handbuilding this week, it looks like I'm allergic to the clay itself. @.@

Pretty good! :) In an easy semester, starting to write again. I have a fic in progress you might like. You?
