I'm assuming you're on a mac? I got this from the comments on the kotaku article, dunno how helpful it is.
To anyone who cares, I have gotten SMT: Imagine to work on a Mac (MBP to be precise) running under Crossover Games. I got it from free about a month back, but if you are looking for a free alternative, it should run under WINE.
One thing you will need to do it get the font files from a WinXP install that has Far East Language Support installed. Just copy all those fonts into your WINE font folder.
I'd suggest wine/crossover as well. Though sometimes it takes a lot of fussing to get things working for that. So searching around for details from someone who has done it before helps. If it's just copying some fonts, then that should be easy enough.
Isn't your Mac new enough to have Intel chips (check "About this Mac" under the Apple menu if you're not sure)? If so, you should be able to run it using Boot Camp to boot into WinXP (or Vista, if you're so inclined) and run anything natively, including the SMT MMO.
I'm not sure on how to go about setting up Boot Camp if you haven't already done so (I have one of the last PowerPC iBooks...), but the guys at the local Mac store should be able to walk you through it for free.
Best of luck! I hear it's amazingly sweet ^^ Also, good luck on whatever you've got left for school =P
