Title : While the World is Fading
Fandom : Greek Mythology
Pairing : Hades/Persephone
Theme Set : Epsilon
Rating : Teen-Mature
Notes : In my personal canon, there's a lot of rocky periods in the relationship... somehow, though, most of these turned out sickeningly sweet. XD Oh well~

A [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence entry! :3

#01 - Motion

Hecate's face shifts between three forms as she strokes Persephone's hair and tells her that, in the end, Hades only stole her for love.

#02 - Cool

The air of the Underworld is chilly where their palace is, and when she shivers, unused to being away from the warm sunlight, he presents her with a furred palla to wrap around her shoulders.

#03 - Young

There's an undeniable generational gap between them, which tends to bother the other gods, but when his eyes are on her, she learns to ignore it.

#04 - Last

The last time he sees her before spring blossoms once more leaves him despondent for days, harsher than normal in his decisions, and the other gods begin to take notice.

#05 - Wrong

She wasn't supposed to succumb, to enjoy his lips on hers and his hands on her skin, but she can't help but smile when his fingers brush hers in passing.

#06 - Gentle

She never thought the King of the Underworld would have such unsure, tentative moments, but he often takes her in his arms and simply rests his head atop hers, thinking.

#07 - One

He's never truly had a woman look at him favorably - he is not the most attractive of the family, after all, and a pall of death hangs constantly around him.

#08 - Thousand

Her mother hid her in the fields of Enna to keep her from all the men and gods who sought to win her heart, but Persephone was too child-minded to understand it as anything but keeping her from all her wonderful friends.

#09 - King

He sometimes exerts his authority over her not merely as husband, but also as King, forcing her to kneel before him; she does it gladly, knowing what will come later.

#10 - Learn

It takes a few visits to learn to love him, but on the fourth one, when he greats her with a half-covered sob and pulls her into his arms almost desperately, she knows she can stay with him forever.

#11 - Blur

Centuries seem to pass faster than a mere six months, but they both attribute that to the nature of their relationship, as two gods in consort.

#12 - Wait

Six months can be long or short, she's found, depending on what it is she's waiting for.

#13 - Change

Four years pass before the ice finally breaks and Persephone allows herself to change; one day was all it took for Hades.

#14 - Command

He is stern, and sometimes cruel, and his voice carries with it the command of the immortal leader that he is, but she can sense, from time to time, the softness behind his words.

#15 - Hold

His grip on her hips is harsh, possessive, as he lifts her from the fields of Enna, kicking and screaming.

#16 - Need

In such a desolate place, he needs the flowers twined in her hair, the scent of fruit on her skin, the pulse of life and the beat of her heart.

#17 - Vision

Sometimes, in her innocence or her frailty, she seems almost mortal, but that only adds to her beauty in his eyes.

#18 - Attention

He forms a cult of one as he worships her sun-filled skin, kissing a path down the center of her chest, stopping to nuzzle over her stomach.

#19 - Soul

For the first few years, Persephone sometimes took walks in the forests surrounding the palace, watching the spirits of the dead move silently by, unnoticing; but in time, it grew too disheartening, and she took her walks instead in the Elysian fields.

#20 - Picture

There is something beautiful and memorable in the way she sits on her slightly smaller throne, still soft and sweet since the passage of time has not yet begun to harden her, and he endeavors to remember it forever.

#21 - Fool

Once, a man tried to steal Persephone from him; he acted civil, invited him to dinner, and then imprisoned him in stone and left him there for all eternity.

#22 - Mad

When she tries to run during that first month of her captivity, anger boils through him, and he pins her to the wall, breath hissing between his teeth; she didn't try to run anymore.

#23 - Child

There came a day when she realized that Hades was not only her husband, but her uncle, and that incest seemed to be a family affair.

#24 - Now

Now is a life of mutual affection and responsibility; then was a life of drama and emotion and passion that they reclaim every night, for a few hours.

#25 - Shadow

He waits in the darkness for her for six long months every year, unable to see the flourishing bounty her return to the surface brings, able only to think of her lying beside him in the dark of night.

#26 - Goodbye

Every six months, she has to deal with tears; in the fall, they're the tears of a mother losing her daughter, in the winter, the tears of two lovers parting.

#27 - Hide

He is not an emotional god, but he makes no attempt to disguise the depth of his desire, mental and physical, for his young bride.

#28 - Fortune

He finds it amusing that she prizes the golden bough from Cumae so, but it does make for an interesting quest to give heroes.

#29 - Safe

In Death's arms, Life sleeps comfortably, content, happy.

#30 - Ghost

Over the years, she learns that the sound of souls is not as unnerving as she used to think, and indeed, it begins to lull her to sleep.

#31 - Book

She never took to reading, and instead sits by his feet as he tells stories of great tragedies and powerful heroes.

#32 - Eye

His eyes are dark, absorbing the light, as he watches her every move with quiet affection.

#33 - Never

She remembers a day when she shouted angrily that she would never love him, and it seems absurd as she curls close to her husband, on the edge of sleep.

#34 - Sing

He listened, half surprised, as she sang a long forgotten song while brushing out her hair, seeming to forget his presence.

#35 - Sudden

His fingers grabbing into her hips and lifting her into the air made her tense up, in horror, and before she knew it, her feet were settled on the harsh ground of the Underworld.

#36 - Stop

It was only when she saw his smirk and felt that strange twisting in her gut that she stopped eating, setting down the seventh seed before something terrible could sprout within her, but she was too late.

#37 - Time

One month was not enough to get to know one another, and it is only when they're given six straight months that Persephone realizes that, perhaps, it isn't such a bad match after all.

#38 - Wash

The first year she stayed with him as his wife, there was a night when she tried to flee to Lethe, for she had heard it could wash away memories; if she were going to sleep beside him, she couldn't stand to remember life above ground; but that river doesn't work for gods.

#39 - Torn

Once, she couldn't decide where she wanted to be; now, she knows, and is all the more frustrated by it.

#40 - History

As the years and centuries pass, they never once falter; every six months, she returns to her mother to make the world live again, and every six months, she allows the world to fade once more as she descends back to her husband.

#41 - Power

At first, she resented everybody involved, feeling like a pawn to be passed back and forth; now, she ignores everybody involved, save for herself and her husband, and it makes her nights easier.

#42 - Bother

Hades wondered, from time to time, why he even bothered trying to be kind to her, but then he would catch that faint little smile on her lips.

#43 - God

He worships her vivacity, her life, in every touch and look, even while appreciating the delicious irony of the God of Death wanting nothing more than to live through her.

#44 - Wall

Persephone learns quickly that Hades' palace is filled with walls that can be put to more uses than simply holding up the roof.

#45 - Naked

He first saw her when she was bathing in the river; he first touched her when she was fastening her robes.

#46 - Drive

His chariot is pulled by four pitch-black stallions, and it is in that chariot that he gives his beloved a tour of the underworld, trying not to notice how she cringes and looks away from the tortures of Tartarus, trying to believe she will grow to accept them with the passage of time.

#47 - Harm

He never intentionally hurts her, but there are days when he loses his temper more than he should - still, she forgives him even with the bruises still violet on her hips.

#48 - Precious

The iron weight on her ring finger used to be unbearable, but now it is the only reminder, in a world of blossoming flowers, of her other life.

#49 - Hunger

It was temptation that brought them together; hunger for companionship on his part, hunger for a few bites of fruit on hers.

#50 - Believe

At first, she does not believe he respects her, but when he turns away in pain after yet another rejection, her heart twists just a little.

What could be better than fertility and death ending up in what seems to be a working relationship? After that first month of ZOMG KIDNAPPING, the only other times you hear of them, it's Hades protecting her from Theseus's friend, or Persephone being all Queen of the Underworld. XD

There is a surprising amount of sweetness, especially for these two lovers, but a tart bitterness and pain as well. I think you balance both sides of the relationship beautifull, overall! ♥

Hehe. I'm tempted to write a short story with them, too, that shows more of the bitter side. More of the first four years where she's still getting used to him. :3

Beautiful... *sigh*

Great job! The romance, the angst, everything is just perfect. Love it very much.

In fact, Hades/Persephone is one of my favorite fandom. So, thank you for writing this.

X3 Thank you very much! I'm glad I'm living up to people's expectations of this pairing for the most part. When working with something like Greco-Roman mythology, I always get a bit worried.

But then again, I'm the geek who wrote a Laocoon death-fic while I had his death scene in the Aenied, in the original Latin, in front of me for reference the entire time. XD;
